A Legend Among Legends
A special feature on "Warlord" Grat Rochord

In lieu of the player spotlight, I have instead chosen to bring to you a special feature on one of Ashen Empires' long standing and well known players, Grat Rochord of the Legends Server. As the title suggests, he is a legendary figure in the world of Dransik. How did he get his start, and what makes him so respected (and sometimes despised) among our community?
Grat, the Warlord, has been playing Ashen Empires since the Krythian Inception. "In early days of Dransik, there was an area Krythian, before the world changed. So to separate the PvP server and the Non-PvP server they renamed them Dransik New World (PvP) and Krythian Inception (Non-PvP)," he recalls. "My first server was DNW (Dransik New World), but when you're out mining near Jeel and someone just comes up and PKs you, with no comment, no nothing, sort of deters you (I was level 7 at the time). I went back to get my corpse, picked up my stuff, and the same guys comes out without any word, does it again. Gave me a bad taste for PvP at that time." Since then he tells me he's only played maybe 1 month total on the PvP server, choosing to spend all of his time on what is now called Legends, dedicated to his guild, The Dragoneers, and devoting time on the side to help the community.
Grat is fondly remembered by many due in part to acts of kindness and the time he spent working in the name of the community. From stocking the stores with much needed resources to holding special community events such as the planting contest, Grat went the extra mile. According to Leah, another well known community advocate, "He would be generous and sell to shops stuff that was needed...I remember telling him there was no sulphur, next day there was a store full of it."
But he did not walk that mile alone. "His guild has always been known to do great things in support for the community," says Angeline Silverfire. In fact, Grat, the Dark Dragon of the Dragoneers, says that his guild mates are the ones that influenced him to be who he is today. The crowning achievement of Grat�s AE career is the work they did on the Dragoneer's Den website. Originally concepted by Latvian guild mate Jin Roh, the site became "a guide for Ashen Empires, showing the skills, tools, items crafted, magery and much, much more." The website remains a fount of knowledge and wealth, though slightly out of date, and is still used by many as an invaluable resource.
Both Grat and his guild are widely known but perhaps also widely misunderstood, partially a result of his sometimes cool exterior and esoteric guild rituals. "[The Dragoneers was] the only guild I knew of that had a joining ceremony...much fan fare but really secretive about some things." Some players even suspect that the guild had inside connections to developers because they always seemed to know which resource or mob would be the most valuable in upcoming changes to the game.
Grat started as a battlemage, turned archer, but quickly became known among many as "Warlord" Grat due to his ability to set prices. Before AE Auction was born, players would turn to him for advice on market conditions. Leah tells us that at one point he "controlled the economy and set prices on KI. He told people how much to sell featherboxes for and everyone went by the prices he put." Though power often corrupts the wielder, Grat seems to have escaped this stigma. "He's been fair for the most part. I look at him as a seasoned veteran of the game that has many battle scars (good and bad!)," Leah continues. Grat has no high opinion of himself and what he's done, noting that he has his fair share of those that despise him. Still, descriptions like "a perfect player," outweigh the disgruntled undertones that some might associate with the Dark Dragon.
Throughout the years, from the "bad times when TKO took over to the good times when Demonspire and Talazar's Revenge began" Grat continues to support AE in one way or another as much as his real life projects let him. "Like everything in the world, things evolve, either for the better or worse. In my opinion the changes for AE have overall been for the best," says Grat. "As for who made me the 'Legend' I am today, that would be the rest of the server did that."
